Supplier Similarity

Two tools provide Supplier-to-Supplier comparison metrics.

  • Similarity Map for a given Supplier - For a given Suppler a similarities cloud view map is produced. This displays the closeness of the manufacturing process set of the given Supplier to the manufacturing process set every other Supplier. Suppliers very similar to given Supplier are displayed in larger font. Suppliers dis-similar in smaller fonts.

  • Pair wise Similarity Calculator - This tool calculates the closeness metric for two Suppliers and provides internal details of the calculation.

RfD Engine

The Request for Discovery (RfD) Engine, the core innovation, is a Semantic Similarity technology used to measure “closeness” between sets of manufacturing processes.

  • Process Pair Closeness – The measure of closeness between two individual manufacturing processes.

  • Process Sets Closeness – The measure of closeness between two set of manufacturing processes. This is used to measure the capabilities closeness of two Suppliers

  • Requirement Set to Capabilities Set Closeness – This is used to measure the closeness of a Supplier's manufacturing process set to a requirement process set for manufacturing a part.

The RfD Engine is an information based similarities algorithm based on "Semantic Similarity in a Taxonomy: An Information-Based Measure" (Resnik) and "Finding Similar Objects Using a Taxonomy: A Pragmatic Approach" (Schwarz).

The RfD Engine has a unique modification - SQI insight - to the general similarity algorithm. This modification enables measuring the closeness of the set of processes required to manufacture a part to the associated set of process capabilities of a given Supplier.
